DOC NYC 2011, New York’s largest festival of documentary storytelling, will run this year from Nov. 2-10. 

DOC NYC 2011 is bigger and better than ever, and includes a number of films, panels and discussions that coud be of particular interest to your students.  Among them, The Island President, a beautifully shot film that follows the desperate crusade of the President of the Maldives as he attempts to save his country from disappearing beneath the waves as a result of climate change; Undefeated, a real-life Friday Night Lightsthat has won exuberant praise wherever it has screened; With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, about the legendary creator of Spider-man, Iron Man and the X-Men; and The Greater Good, an issues documentary exploring fears and controversy surrounding vaccines.  There are many more to choose from, including international films, biographies, music, sports docs, and a tribute to pioneer Richard Leacock, of Primaryfame.

The festival also includes programs of short films with linked themes, such as New York Uncovered, andvLatin American Visions 

In addition, DOC NYC offers a host of vital panels for experienced and aspiring filmmakers, covering distribution, financing, promotion and the art of documentary filmmaking. This would be an awesome opportunity to gain insight into the industry and obtain new resources related to film and filmmaking.

How do you sell a documentary? In this workshop/competition, five preselected emerging nonfiction filmmakers will pitch their ideas to a panel of distinguished documentary producers. The producers will give them feedback on their concept as well as their presentation skills—great lessons for all aspiring filmmakers. Urban Word NYC’s Preemptive Education is right around the corner. This year we have secured an incredible line-up of top educators, professors, artists and activists in the fields of spoken word, hip-hop and social justice pedagogy to present at our weekend conference at New York University. The conference always kicks off with an incredible performance and panel discussion that pairs NYC’s top youth poets with giants in our field. This year we have Dr. Michelle Fine, Dr. Ernest Morrell and Joanne Smith of Girls for Gender Equity. This event is free and not to be missed.
